An unpleasant odour develops when vacuuming, or dust is emitted by the appliance.

This may have a range of causes: your appliance is equipped with a so-called additional air regulator located on the handle, which is designed to allow you to reduce the suction power quickly so that objects are not vacuumed up inadvertently. However, during normal vacuuming, this additional air regulator must always be completely closed in order to guarantee full suction power. You may not have assembled the vacuum cleaner correctly after removing it from the packaging. Check that all the parts are secured and adjusted properly. To do this, please consult the operating instructions and the quick start guide. You may have failed to replace or close parts of the vacuum cleaner correctly which you had opened or removed in order to clean the filter or change the dust bag. Check that all the parts are secured and adjusted properly. To do this, please consult the operating instructions and the quick start guide. The dust bag may have burst. Replace this with a new one. The dust bag may not have been changed for a long period, or the dust container has not been emptied and cleaned, causing the contents to develop an unpleasant odour. Change the dust bag immediately, or empty and clean the dust container. To do this, please consult the operating instructions and the quick start guide. The filters may require cleaning. To do this, please consult the operating instructions and the quick start guide.

How can I vacuum in an energy-saving, environmentally-friendly manner?

There are several ways to do this: Before starting to vacuum, remove obstacles you would otherwise need to vacuum around laboriously. This ensures that the vacuum cleaner operates for shorter periods. Your appliance is equipped with a so-called additional air regulator located on the handle, which is designed to allow you to reduce the suction power quickly so that objects are not vacuumed up inadvertently. However, during normal vacuuming, this additional air regulator must always be completely closed in order to guarantee full suction power. If your appliance has a suction power regulator, set this according to the task in hand. For example, considerably lower suction power is required to vacuum hard floors than for carpets. Vacuum the surface in question in parallel strips which should ideally not overlap. If you take a disorganised approach to your vacuuming, you may vacuum certain areas several times. Observe the maintenance intervals. Remove soiling from your vacuum cleaner on a regular basis. In the process, check the floor nozzles, telescopic tube and suction hose. An unrestricted airflow is still the most effective way to vacuum. Switch off the vacuum cleaner during breaks (e.g. when changing the nozzles).

What can’t I vacuum up?

Do not use the vacuum cleaner to remove burning, glowing or smouldering particles such as hot ash, charcoal, wood charcoal, cigarettes or similar. This may cause fires! Do not use the vacuum cleaner to vacuum people, animals or plants. Do not vacuum any items of clothing currently being worn on the body. Do not vacuum near the heads of individuals. These actions may result in injuries. Do not use the vacuum cleaner to vacuum toner (such as that found in printers or photocopiers) or other explosive or highly flammable substances. This may cause explosions or fires. Do not use the vacuum cleaner to vacuum liquids, carpet cleaners or foam. This may result in a short circuit within the appliance. Do not use the vacuum cleaner to vacuum sharp, pointed objects, such as shards of glass, rubble, drawing pins etc. This can damage the appliance. Do not use the vacuum cleaner to vacuum fine dust such as stone dust, plaster, cement or similar particulate matter. This clogs the filters and impairs the suction power.

When should you change the vacuum cleaner’s motor protection and exhaust filters?

If one of these filters is warped, damaged, worn out in any other way or missing, it must be replaced immediately. In this case, visit our online shop or contact our hotline on: +49 (0)2933 982-460 or -461

Schlagwörter: Staubsauger
When should you clean the vacuum cleaner’s motor protection and exhaust filters?

In the case of bagged vacuum cleaners, the motor protection filter is located directly behind the dust bag and immediately in front of the motor. In the case of bagless vacuum cleaners, it is usually part of the dust container. Check the motor protection filter each time you change the dust bag or empty the dust container. This filter should be cleaned if visibly soiled. If it is made of foam material, it can be rinsed thoroughly and must be left to dry completely afterwards. If it is made of paper ribs (HEPA), it should not be cleaned with water or allowed to get wet. Instead, brush it off thoroughly with a soft brush. The exhaust filter is located at the point where the exhaust air leaves the appliance. This may be on the top, back or bottom of the appliance, or even in one of the wheels. The exhaust filter does not require checking as frequently – when unpleasant odours develop at the latest. In the event that you identify any soiling, the cleaning procedure for the exhaust filter is identical to that of the motor protection filter: if it is made of foam material, it can be rinsed thoroughly and must be left to dry completely afterwards. If it is made of paper ribs (HEPA), it should not be cleaned with water or allowed to get wet. Instead, brush it off thoroughly with a soft brush.

The appliance suddenly stops vacuuming, what should I do?

Your vacuum cleaner contains an integrated function which protects the appliance from overheating. This is activated as soon as the temperature in the appliance’s interior grows too high. In this case, switch off the appliance and disconnect it from the mains. Look for the cause of overheating (either the dust bag needs changing, the dust container needs emptying, the filters require cleaning or a blockage has formed somewhere which requires eliminating). Check the tube, nozzles and hose when attempting to locate a possible blockage. Now wait 45 minutes. You can now switch on the cooled-off appliance once more.

Change the dust bag whenever the “replace dust bag” sign is illuminated or this is indicated in the viewing window (red). Notwithstanding the above, change the dust bag every three months, as soon as unpleasant odours develop.

Schlagwörter: Staubsauger
White foam forms in the boiling chamber of my egg boiler during the cooking process.

The boiling chamber is soiled. The egg’s inner air cell must be pierced so that no egg white can escape during the boiling process. This air cell is located between the white and shell at the large end of the egg. The egg piercer is located underneath the measuring cup. The entire boiling chamber must be cleaned before the appliance is used again.

The degree of browning is uneven when my four-slice toaster only contains two slices of toast.

The toaster’s browning function is designed for maximum use. If only two slices are toasted in a four-slice toaster, for example, each one should be placed in a single slot facing the other one in order to achieve even browning.

Not all the heating filaments in my toaster are visibly glowing.

The heating filaments may be nearer or further away from the substrate and glow more or less intensively as a result. The heating function is not defective, as the toaster contains a series circuit of heating plates and filaments.

A slice of bread has become trapped in my toaster.

Remove the power plug and release the slice of bread using a blunt wooden stick (e.g. a brush handle). Avoid touching the heating filaments in the process.

Can I use my toaster to warm plates?

No. The slots should never be covered. You should also never use the roll attachment to warm up large items, as this may result in an accumulation of heat and, in the worst-case scenario, in damage to the appliance.

The lever on my toaster won’t stay down

Check whether your appliance’s power cable is attached properly.

The grilling stone on my raclette grill does not heat up enough (appliance-dependent).

The grilling stone takes longer to release heat to the grilled food than a metal grilling surface. However, it does retain the heat for longer.

How can I remove residues from the grilling surfaces and pans of my raclette grill easily?

Soak the metal grilling surfaces and pans in hot water with detergent for around an hour, before wiping them down with a soft dishcloth. If your appliance has a grilling stone, under no circumstances should you soak this too! Grilling stones are porous by nature and can become saturated with water which may result in damage to the stone when it is next heated up. Instead, wipe it down with warm water and detergent. In time, a coloured patina may form on the stone, despite cleaning. This is natural, and you should never attempt to remove it with aggressive cleaning agents or sharp objects.

Can I use the supplied grill grate when the appliance is in microwave mode or when the combined programme is in use?

The grill grate can also be used in microwave or combined function mode, but must be placed in the middle of the turntable with at least two cm of space free on all sides.

Can I switch off the pilot light in the microwave?

This is not possible in most cases. If this is not stated explicitly in the operating instructions, then unfortunately not.

Schlagwörter: Licht, Lampe
My microwave turntable does not turn.

Check whether the rolling ring, hub and turntable are positioned correctly. Also check whether the rolling ring’s wheels are blocked as a result of soiling.

Can I use the microwave without the turntable?

Using the microwave without the hub, turntable and rolling ring is not recommended, as this results in the uneven heating of the food inside.
However, if you would like to heat food up in an ovenproof dish, for example, you can use the appliance without the hub, turntable and rolling ring. In this case, we recommend that you either stir the food regularly or heat it on the lowest setting for a longer period. This way, the heat can be distributed through the food more effectively.

How can I neutralise unpleasant odours in the interior of my microwave?

Fill a suitable bowl with water and place a sliced lemon inside. Subsequently heat this in the microwave for approx. five minutes at the highest setting. Finally, wipe down the interior with a soft cloth and some detergent. Afterwards, leave the door of the microwave open for a while to allow the moisture to escape.

My food is no more than lukewarm after being microwaved.

Check the selected power setting on your appliance, and increase this where necessary. Also check whether your tableware is microwaveable.

My food does not heat up evenly in my microwave.

Microwaves only penetrate the food to a depth of approx. 2-3 cm. The heat is distributed more or less effectively depending on the food type. Stir the food when heating once or several times and leave it to rest for a couple of minutes afterwards to allow the heat to be distributed more effectively.

Where and how do I position my microwave properly?

Please take note of the information in the operating instructions. You can also download the operating instructions from the respective product page on our website.

How do I know whether a container is microwaveable?

The tableware used in microwaves may not contain any metal, e.g. no gilt edges or metallic colours, unless they expressly state that they are microwaveable. Plastic tableware may be used, but must be able to withstand temperatures of at least 180°C and may not be made of melamine. The tableware may not contain any sealed cavities, e.g. in the handles. Porous tableware is also unsuitable. Suitable tableware should not heat up in the microwave. Tableware often features a label confirming whether it is microwaveable or not. If the appliance is used in grill or convection mode, all types of heat-resistant tableware and containers may be used which are suitable for use in conventional ovens. If the appliance is being used in combination mode, i.e. with a combination of grill or convection and microwave functions, the tableware must be microwaveable and heat-resistant.

Water is collecting in my refrigerator with automatic defrost function.

Check the back of your appliance’s cooling chamber to see whether the defrosting liquid outlet is blocked.

Schlagwörter: Kühlgerät, Kühl-/Gefriergerät
My refrigerator/freezer is not cooling sufficiently.

Check the location of the appliance. All refrigerators are subdivided into climate classes which you can find on the product data sheet, located on the final page of your operating instructions or on the product site at www.severin.de. These specify the permitted ambient temperatures at the place of installation.

Schlagwörter: Gefrieren, Kühlgerät, Kühl-/Gefriergerät, Kühlschrank, Eisschrank
My refrigerator/freezer is making strange noises, is this normal?

During the cooling process, the refrigerant circulates within the cooling system. This causes operating noises such as “bubbling”, “hissing” or “humming”. These noises may be louder or more frequent depending on the appliance’s setting.

Schlagwörter: Gefrieren, Kühlgerät, Kühl-/Gefriergerät, Kühlschrank, Eisschrank
Which cooling setting should my refrigerator/freezer have?

This depends on the filling level, the temperature at the place of installation and the frequency with which the appliance is opened. A higher setting is generally required in an environment in which the door of the appliance is opened more frequently than it would be in a private household with just two people, for example.

Schlagwörter: Gefrieren, Kühlgerät, Kühl-/Gefriergerät, Kühlschrank, Eisschrank
What is the function of the fast-freeze drawer in my refrigerator (appliance-dependent)?

The constructional design of the fast-freeze drawer guarantees that heat is drawn out of the food to be frozen more quickly, allowing it to freeze faster.

Schlagwörter: Gefrieren, Kühlgerät, Kühl-/Gefriergerät, Kühlschrank, Eisschrank
Do the surfaces of my SEVERIN refrigerator contain nanoparticles (e.g. silver) to create an antibacterial surface?

Our new models (from 2010) no longer contain this feature. If you require information about an older appliance, please contact our service team on +49 (0)2933/982-1460 or at service@severin.de.

Schlagwörter: Kühlgerät
How can I determine the weight of ingredients in a bowl or jug using my SEVERIN kitchen scales?

Place the container on the scales when empty and switch on the appliance. Now press the “tare” button, or the on/off button (depending on the appliance). The scales should now display 0 g again. The container can subsequently be removed from the scales and filled, and its own weight will not be included when it is next weighed, as long as the scales are not switched off in the interim.

What sort of milk should I use in my yoghurt maker?

In principle, all types of milk can be used. Homogenised milk (UHT milk) is best, however. All other types of milk should be heated briefly to around 90 °C (just below boiling point) and then cooled down to 40 °C.

Schlagwörter: Joghurtmaker, Joghurtmaschine, Jogurt, Joghurtbereiter
In some jars, the yoghurt produced by my yoghurt maker is very runny, while the yoghurt in others is firmer, despite being made from the same ingredients. How is this possible?

It is important that the jars are not contaminated with bacteria after having been thoroughly cleaned and dried. After cleaning, avoid placing your hands in the jars and close them immediately using the lids, which should also have been thoroughly cleaned and dried.

Schlagwörter: Joghurtmaker, Joghurtmaschine, Jogurt, Joghurtbereiter
How high is the temperature used in my yoghurt maker?

Approx. 40-45 °C. The temperature of the yoghurt also depends on the initial temperature of the milk and the preparation time. If cold milk is used, this is 8-9 hours, and if warm milk is used, 5-6 hours.

Schlagwörter: Joghurtmaker, Joghurtmaschine, Jogurt, Joghurtbereiter
What does the “turbo” function on my hand mixer / hand blender refer to?

In this power setting, the appliance operates with maximum power and revolutions per minute.

Schlagwörter: Handrührgerät, Handrührer, Pürierstab, Zauberstab
My juice extractor switches off during operation or refuses to switch back on.

The appliance is equipped with an integrated thermal safety cut-out which may have switched it off automatically. Please remove the power plug and let the appliance cool down to room temperature. You may need to press a reset button, depending on the appliance. Please consult your operating instructions for further information.

Schlagwörter: Saftpresse
The coating in my egg boiler is coming off.

These are lime scale residues which are dissolving. Please descale the appliance as specified in the operating instructions.

Grilled food is cooked through more quickly on one side of the grill grate than on the other.

Check whether the appliance is straight, and whether you have placed enough water in the tray. The appliance must be placed on a flat surface for even results.

Schlagwörter: BBQ, Grillen
How do I remove residues from the grill grate on my electric barbecue grill?

If your grill grate is chrome-plated, apply conventional baking powder to all the particularly soiled areas. Then fill a washing tub or similarly large container with hot water, place the grate inside and leave it to soak for around an hour. Afterwards, the residues can be removed easily with a normal dishcloth. If you have a coated grill grate, it is sufficient to soak the grate in hot water with detergent for around an hour and then wipe it clean.

Schlagwörter: BBQ, Grillen
My operating instructions state that I should only operate the grill with water in the tray provided. Why? (Appliance-dependent)

During operation, fat or meat juices emerging from the grilled goods drip into the collection container. Without water, these can quickly solidify and burn, and may produce unpleasant odours or even catch fire.

Schlagwörter: BBQ, Grillen
May I cover the grilled food on my electric barbecue grill with aluminium foil or grill trays?

No, because this may result in an accumulation of heat, and the appliance may be damaged or even destroyed.

Schlagwörter: BBQ, Grillen, Alufolie, Aluschale
The heating element on my electric barbecue grill fails to heat up.

The heating element features a safety micro switch so that it only heats up when it has been placed in the housing correctly. Please check whether the heating element has been placed in the housing correctly.

Your appliance requires descaling. Please do this as specified in the operating instructions in the section entitled “Cleaning and care”.

Can I whip cream using my milk frother?

No, the appliance does not feature this function. We advise you to use an electric hand mixer, for example.

What sort of milk can I use in my milk frother?

We recommend that you use low-fat UHT milk (1.5% fat content) straight from your refrigerator. Soya milk, soya rice drink and almond milk can also be frothed. Oat drink and coconut milk are generally not suitable for frothing.

My milk frother fails to froth part of the milk.

Clean the container. It may be the case that old milk froth or detergent residues are preventing the milk from frothing, for example.

My milk frother fails to froth the milk / part of the milk will not froth.

Depending on the device, it is normal that around one third of the milk does not froth.

Can the coffee be contaminated with harmful substances, particularly after descaling (e.g. lead)?

The thermo jug is soiled. Clean it by dissolving a dishwasher tab in the jug with hot water. Alternatively, please use denture cleaning tabs or baking powder. Afterwards, rinse the jug thoroughly and dry it upside down. CAUTION: Never reach into the jug with objects or with your hands!
